The Vehicles of Kalista-Equitar

The original speeder designs of Kalista-Equitar are touted as works of art as far away as Coruscant and Ord Mantell, and are seen as status symbols among the Imperial aristocracy. Kalista-Equitar Manufacturing was born eight years prior to the Battle of Yavin, when Xen Kalista, who had recently settled on Tatooine, hired a local handyman, Ade Equitar, to repair some damaged vaporators. The two, both from exceedingly different backgrounds, found that they had much in common.
        Xen had studied engineering, and from a very early age had wished to design and build his own conveyances, while Ade had been enslaved as a youth and forced to work as a mechanic in Mos Espa. Each had a desire to succeed in a business that had long stagnated under the yoke of corporate giants such as Sorosuub, Incom, and Ubrikkian. Starting small seemed the best course of action. Financing was no problem for Xen Kalista, as he came from a wealthy family, and both he and Equitar were brimming with optimistic enthusiasm. They purchased a run-down garage that had formerly been used to produce podracers, and hired a few local mechanics to help out.
        As luck would have it, their first design contract was with one of Jabba the Hutt's most loyal retainers: Bib Fortuna. He wanted a custom-built landspeeder, something that looked good and performed better. Fortuna's expectations were high, and in some cases, unrealistic. In the end, Kalista and Equitar delivered an exceptional design ahead of schedule, and Fortuna was pleased. It wasn't long before other high-paying clients, who had seen or heard of Fortuna's new toy, came knocking on their door.
        Over the next few years, Kalista-Equitar transformed into Mos Espa's largest manufacturing plant, with nearly three hundred employees and countless droids working the assembly floor. These days, Kalista-Equitar manufactures several lines of repulsorlift and ground craft, and these vehicles are exported to dealers all over the galaxy. Kalista-Equitar's quality of service and originality of design are near-legendary, and they will likely continue to produce exceptional products for many years to come.

Although Kalista-Equitar has moved into mass-market manufacturing of quality repulsorlifts and ground craft, the founders are well aware of their roots and continue to take private contracts for unique and original designs. Although they are not cheap, both Equitar and Kalista enjoy a good challenge, and are always willing to give a promising underdog an opportunity to acquire their services. Any design, no matter how far-fetched, whimsical, or preposterous, is given equal consideration.
        In addition to creating original, made-to-order vehicles from scratch, Kalista-Equitar will also modify existing vehicles to their client's specifications. While this is less-costly than buying a custom-made model, it isn't inexpensive. Regardless of the order, building or modifying a vehicle isn't something that happens overnight. Due to the popularity of their work, the waiting list is often several months long. This time can be reduced, and this requires that the fee for the requested labor be increased substantially.
        Kalista-Equitar offers mass-produced repulsorlifts, as well. Their showroom in Mos Espa can be visited by appointment. Any one of their qualified sales personnel will happily show the newest models to potential customers, and test drives and tours of the factory floor are also available. Kalista-Equitar is an equal-opportunity employer, and they are always looking for talented individuals with experience in the technical, sales, and security fields.

The founders of Kalista-Equitar came from opposite ends of the universe, each growing up under radically different circumstances. Even though Ade Equitar and Xenadi Kalista are business associates, they are very close friends as well. This unity pervades every project they undertake, and one would never think to make an important business decision without getting an opinion from the other.

Ade Equitar

Ade Equitar
Ade was born to an underprivileged family on Triffis, eking out a living in the crowded streets and alleyways of Tal'maar, the planet's industrial capital. Never expecting much from his life, he was hardly surprised when he was taken as a slave by a Huttese press gang and shipped to Tatooine. Sold to the Besadii clan, he was put to work in Mos Espa as a mechanic. He found he had a knack for the occupation, enjoying his work as much as he could under the circumstances.
        When the Emperor came to power, and Hutts loosened their hold on Tatooine, Ade found himself to be free for the first time in over two decades. Initially lost and unsure of himself, he eventually took to doing odd jobs, occasionally working as a hired hand on nearby moisture farms. One of these farms had been recently purchased by Xenadi Kalista, who immediately recognized Ade's mechanical talents.
        Ade is a middle-aged Triffian, with coarse black body hair and greenish-brown skin tanned by long exposure to Tatooine's twin suns. He is thin for a member of his species, and his yellow eyes are bright and inquisitive. He cares little for clothing, preferring a heavy leather tool belt and work gloves to more cumbersome attire.

Triffians are short, rotund humanoids that hail from the planet of Triffis. They have bodies covered with coarse hair that ranges from black to cream-colored. Triffian skin tone varies from pale blue and white to green and brown. Two flaps, which aid in the regulation of heat when unfurled, protrude from the sides of their heads like oversized ears. The typical Triffian is easy-going, albeit cocky. They do not frighten easily, a trait which has brought more than one to a quick and messy end.
        One example of a famous Triffian is Ebe Endocott, a pod jockey of some renown.

Xen Kalista

Xen Kalista
Xenadi Kalista was the third son of aristocratic parents in the Kuat system. Cursed with serious health problems and confined to a repulsorchair for most of his early life, he took refuge in his studies, excelling in the fields of mathematics, geometry, and technical design. As an introverted youth, he would spend hours either studying or doodling, dreaming of making his art and illustrations into real machines and objects.
        By the time he was fifteen, he had designed and built his own custom repulsorchair. He was sent to the Imperial Technical Institute on Coruscant by his parents. He earned several degrees, eventually graduating with a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering. Shortly after his graduation, he underwent a surgical procedure that restored the use of his legs, and several months of therapy followed.
        When offered a position with Kuat Drive Yards, Xen refused, suspecting that his parents were somehow behind the job offer. Instead, he set out on his own, hoping to see the galaxy on his own terms and on his own two feet. After several years touring systems along the Corellian Run, Xen found himself on Tatooine. He was entranced by the parched desolation of the world, and soon decided to make it his home.
        Xen is a handsome human in his late thirties with thinning brown hair and hazel eyes. He walks with a slow, deliberate gait, the product of long months of physical therapy. He dresses in simple styles, looking more like a moisture farmer than the wealthy CEO of a successful company. Though humble, he is well aware of his merits and strengths, and can be both cunning and shrewd.

Kalista-Equitar Manufacturing specializes in the creation all manner of repulsorlift craft, as well as a few wheeled vehicles. Though famous for their individually-crafted designs, success has allowed them to branch out into mass-market vehicle sales. These days, you need not be rich to own one of Kalista-Equitar's vehicles, though it helps.

The KE-2

Although dozens of original speeder designs have been built to order by Kalista-Equitar, only four of these have seen any representation on the open market. Two of these designs, the KE-2 and the Ronto, merit special attention due to their popularity in the core worlds.
        The KE-2 was intended as an entry into the security market as a police interceptor. Although it did well in initial trials and got high marks for handling and speed, it wasn't judged durable enough and few official contracts were gained. Xen Kalista, whose love affair with fast speeders was near obsessive, decided to market a slimmed-down version of the KE-2 as a sport speeder. The KE-2 proved popular in the core worlds, and several hundred orders were placed. The design was eventually licensed (at a substantial profit) to Sorosuub as the XP-82.
        KE-2s are built low to the ground, with a wide cross-section to allow for greater stability on sharp turns (+2 to Pilot skill checks when making any turning maneuvers). Four turbine engines extend gracefully from the rear fuselage, and give the impression of barely-contained kinetic force. Nearly a quarter of KE-2s were built as convertibles (reduce the cover the vehicle provides from three-quarters to one-half). Sorosuub's XP-82 is similar enough in design to be indistinguishable from the KE-2.

The Ronto

While the KE-2 was built as a speed machine, the Kalista-Equitar Ronto was designed as an all-terrain workhorse. Touted as the ìgo anywhere, do anythingî landspeeder, it certainly lives up to its reputation. Not only can it haul a large amount of cargo, its spacious cabin can seat five humanoids comfortably.
        While intended for the civilian market, the Ronto has obvious military applications. Several planetary governments placed small orders for the Ronto after observing the speeder's capabilities at the Repulsorlift Exposition on Malastare. Armed, armored, and dubbed the Ronto II, it is somewhat slower than its predecessor, but much more resilient and capable of overcoming just about any obstacle on the modern battlefield.
        The Ronto's cockpit is fully-enclosed by its streamlined hull. Access is gained through one of two sliding doors, and two large repulsorlift engines run the length of the vehicle on either side. The Ronto II is somewhat less sleek due to its additional armor plating, and the inclusion of a top-mounted turret leaves no doubt as to its function as a weapon of war.

The Constable

Speeder Bikes
Even though Kalista-Equitar is well-known for the quality of their landspeeder designs, they have created several speeder bikes as well. One of these, the Constable, has proven quite popular as a patrol vehicle for planetary security forces. While built to appeal to the security market, the Constable can also be found in the hands of private citizens.
        Unique amongst speeder bikes, the Constable is equipped with an armored sidecar mounted to the right side of the driver. The sidecar is equipped with its own small repulsorfield generator, and is capable of transporting a small amount of cargo in lieu of a passenger. Though unarmed, weapons are typically added by the purchaser, and can include anything from repeating blasters to anti-personnel grenade launchers.

The Cutthroat

The very mention of swoops conjures up images of rebellious youth, dangerous races, and bloodthirsty gangs. As its name implies, the Cutthroat builds on these stereotypes in order to increase its appeal. Light and fragile, even by conventional swoop standards (if there is such a thing), Cutthroats are still popular with both brigands and posers alike due to their economical price.
        Built not only to be maneuverable, but fast as well, they are capable of unrivaled acceleration (+2 to Pilot skill checks when accelerating). The Cutthroat is a typical swoop design, remarkable only in the fact that it holds together at high speeds. Ade Equitar has been unofficially quoted as saying that someone riding a Cutthroat "may as well be riding a broomstick," an analogy that fits this ultra-light swoop remarkably well.

The Falconet

Kalista-Equitar's attempt to break into the airspeeder market turned out to be a disappointment. Their entry into a business already glutted with thousands of models was the Falconet. Designed as an observation craft for operation in arid environments, it proved to be too expensive to produce in comparison with its rivals, such as Incom's T-16 or T-47. A few small government contracts were gained, but the Falconet's lukewarm reception was not enough to justify continued production of the model.
        Designed to resemble a bird of prey native to Ade Equitar's home planet of Triffis, the Falconet is eye-catching despite its lack of popularity. The airspeeder's wings are swept forward, tilting slightly upwards, while the rear stabilizers project back and down from the fuselage. The gunner/navigator sits directly in front of the pilot, and the bubble canopy provides excellent visibility for both occupants.
        Despite (or perhaps, because of) its failure to sell, used examples of this model can be found quite cheaply on the secondary market. The Falconet's resistance to the adverse effects of desert environments makes it a fine choice for anyone who needs to explore or scout any one of the millions of desert worlds the universe over.

The Torne

Kalista-Equitar dabbled for a time in the podracer market, but never saw a great deal of success. Besides building custom pods for up-and-coming jockeys, Xen Kalista also designed a mass-market podracer based on a design he had created for Gavin Toran (who is known as Gavin Torne on the professional podracing circuit). In total, only thirty-four Tornes were produced.
        The Torne is well-known as a sturdy podracer that offers good handling and exceptional protection to its pilot. Long and sleek, with an organically-designed pod, the Torne is an intimidating sight on any course. The engines emit a keening wail at high speeds that can be heard for miles.

The Eopie

One of the rarer Kalista-Equitar products is the Eopie, a vehicle that has been jokingly dubbed a ìsand yachtî by Xen Kalista. It is similar in design to most cargo skiffs, but is visibly larger and features an enclosed cockpit, an adjoining climate-controlled lounge, and a small observation deck. Although slow, it performs well in its designated role as a pleasure craft, and can even be used to haul small amounts of cargo in a pinch.
        Popular with wealthy clients, Eopies are built to order. Exteriors are sculpted and painted to order, and interior decorations consist of imported hardwoods, precious metals, and luxurious silks. Standard amenities include air conditioning, a fully-stocked bar, a kitchenette, and comfortable (though not spacious) sleeping arrangements. The Eopie is perfect for the person who has everything, but still wants more.

The Dune Runner

Miscellaneous Vehicles
One of Ade Equitar's early pet projects was that of a wheeled vehicle designed for use in the desert environment of Tatooine. As old-fashioned and inefficient as the idea was, Xen Kalista agreed to take on the project, and several designs were reviewed before the final choice was made.
        Smaller than most speeders, the Dune Runner is a four-wheeled vehicle capable of traversing the loose sand and rock of Tatooine's deserts. The vehicle's rear wheels are massive, with computer-controlled spade-like treads that extend or retract to gain traction depending on sand depth and other driving conditions. The vehicle's open-frame design ensures that it is light weight, but does nothing to protect occupants from the harsh sun. Thick sheets of canvas or other materials are often stretched over the frame to provide some shade for the driver and passengers.
        Using a solar-charged electronic cell as a fuel source, the Dune Runner's range is limited only by the rise and fall of Tatooine's twin suns. Although slow and unable to traverse rough terrain, the Dune Runner has proven valuable for crossing the large, sandy expanses of Tatooine's plains. They are also economically-priced, and many moisture farmers have taken to using them for daily chores around their farms.
